The short version

The stalls at the Nyhavn Christmas market sell gløgg and æbleskiver, but the 2026 dates haven't been announced yet. The restaurants' Christmas menus aren't out either: Nyhavns Færgekro offers gløgg and æbleskiver as an add-on to its julefrokost at DKK 125 per person, and Hyttefadet's Christmas menu from 4 November has æbleskiver at DKK 65. Last year several restaurants on the quay published their Christmas menus in early November.

What is gløgg?

Gløgg is a hot drink of wine with aquavit or cognac, sugar, raisins, almonds and spices such as cloves, cardamom and cinnamon. The word comes from Swedish glögg, and only after the Second World War did gløgg become a fixed Danish Christmas drink. Today supermarkets, cafés and bars all sell gløgg in the months before Christmas.

What are æbleskiver?

Æbleskiver are small round cakes fried in a special æbleskive pan and served with powdered sugar and jam. Despite the name (apple slices) there is usually no apple in them: the batter is egg, milk, wheat flour, cardamom and baking soda. Originally they were slices of apple dipped in batter, and the link to Christmas is only about 100 years old. Before that they were served at the many feasts of the year.
