Walks in and around Nyhavn

Nyhavn is a perfect starting point. From here you can walk to some of Copenhagen's best experiences in minutes — along the water to the royal palaces, across the harbour to Christianshavn, or into the old town. Here are three walks, all starting at Nyhavn.

Good walks in and around Nyhavn — along the water to the Little Mermaid, across the Inner Harbour Bridge to Christianshavn, and down Strøget. Routes, distances and tips.

Along the water to the Little Mermaid

Head north along the harbour promenade: past the Royal Danish Playhouse, on to Amalienborg — the King's residence, where the changing of the guard takes place around midday — and through the Amalie Garden with its view of the Opera House across the water. Continue to the Kastellet fortress and on to the Little Mermaid at Langelinie. Allow about 25-30 minutes each way.

Across the harbour bridge to Christianshavn

From the end of Nyhavn, the Inner Harbour Bridge (nicknamed the "Kissing Bridge") takes you across the water to Christianshavn. Here you'll find the Broens street-food market by the water, the old canals and the entrance to Christiania. A short few-minute walk across the bridge — and a completely different mood.

Into the old town along Strøget

West of Nyhavn lies Kongens Nytorv, and from there Strøget begins — one of Europe's longest pedestrian streets. Follow it into the city past shops, squares and the Round Tower. Nyhavn to the City Hall Square takes about 20 minutes at a walking pace, more if you stop along the way.

Tips for the walk

  • Wear comfortable shoes — the cobblestones are charming but hard.
  • Go early if you want the water and the views to yourself.
  • Pair it with the map: see what's on the quay before you set off.
  • The weather turns quickly by the water — bring a layer.
