What's the best time to visit Nyhavn?

May to September is best for terraces and canal views. Early morning (before 09:30) or late afternoon (after 17:00) is quietest and gives the best light for photos. Weekdays are noticeably less crowded than weekends.

Where do I park near Nyhavn?

Nyhavn is in Copenhagen's most expensive parking zone (38 DKK/hour). Realistic options are car parks: Q-Park Sankt Annæ Plads (100 m), Magasin du Nord (200 m), or Kvæsthusgade car park (300 m). Street parking is essentially impossible. See our parking page for details.

Are dogs allowed in Nyhavn?

Yes — dogs must be on a leash on the quay and throughout central Copenhagen (København K). Many outdoor terraces welcome dogs; ask at the door. Indoors is the restaurant's choice, but most classic Danish places accept calm dogs under the table.

How long is Nyhavn?

The canal is exactly 400 m, from the Kongens Nytorv end to the harbour. It takes about 6 minutes to walk the whole strip at an easy pace. House numbers run 1–71 (odd = sunny side, even = shade side).

Which metro do I take to Nyhavn?

Kongens Nytorv station (M3 city ring, M4) is 2 minutes away. It's the closest metro from both the airport and the central station. From the central station it's about 8 minutes on M4.

When is the best time for photos of Nyhavn?

Golden hour just before sunset (April–September: 19:30–21:00) gives the colourful houses the warmest light. Mornings before 08:00 are quietest if you want houses without people. The classic angle is from the Kongens Nytorv end looking down the canal.

How many restaurants are there in Nyhavn?

Around 15–18 along the strip, plus bars and cafés. We cover the ones we've actually visited and can recommend in some context. See our A–Z directory for the full list.

Where can I find public toilets?

Public toilets are at Kongens Nytorv (free, open daily) and at Magasin du Nord (free, open during store hours). Most restaurants and cafés in Nyhavn are customers-only.

How far is Nyhavn from the Little Mermaid?

About 15 minutes' walk along the harbour via Amalienborg and Kastellet. The Mermaid is a relatively small statue (1.25 m) — many visitors find her smaller than expected — but the walk past the royal palaces is pleasant.

Are there hot dog stands in Nyhavn?

The classic Danish pølsevogn at the Kongens Nytorv end of Nyhavn (right by Magasin du Nord) sells grilled and boiled sausages, hot dogs and French remoulade-stuffed hotdogs. Open daily from midday to late evening. It's an institution, not a tourist trap.

When is the Nyhavn Christmas market open?

Typically from the last weekend in November to 22 December. Stalls open around 11:00 and close 21:00. The official opening date is announced in October at visitcopenhagen.dk.

What are the sunny and shade sides in Nyhavn?

The sunny side is the odd house numbers (1, 3, 5, …, 71) — the colourful, iconic row where most restaurants and tourist life is. The shade side is the even numbers — the opposite quay, quieter, fewer venues. It's a natural consequence of the canal's orientation.
