Food a few minutes from Nyhavn: Broens, Paper Island and Boltens Gård

If you want to eat a little away from the quay, there is street food, smørrebrød and a couple of fine-dining restaurants within a few minutes' walk. Here are the places in the streets and squares closest to Nyhavn, with walking times, prices and opening hours.

Broens Street Food, Paper Island, Boltens Gård, Kongens Nytorv and the Strandstræde streets: where to eat a few minutes from Nyhavn, with walking times and prices.

Across the bridge: Broens Street Food

From the end of Nyhavn, the Inderhavnsbroen bridge crosses the harbour to Christianshavn, and at its foot is Broens Street Food at Strandgade 95, about a five-minute walk from the quay. The food market used to be called Broens Gadekøkken. The stalls sell bánh mì, tacos, fish & chips, burgers and smørrebrød, among other things: a bánh mì is 98 DKK, a piece of smørrebrød 55 DKK and fish & chips 130 DKK. The stalls are open from March to October, 11:30–20:00 Sunday to Thursday and 11:00–21:00 on Friday and Saturday.

Paper Island (Papirøen)

Carry on across the bridge and turn left, and you reach Paper Island (Papirøen), about ten minutes' walk from the quay. The street food hall that used to be here closed in 2017, and the people behind it now run Reffen and Broens. Today you'll find Tiger Lily in the 25hours Hotel Paper Island, with Asian sharing dishes and a 250 DKK weekday lunch deal, Lilac at Papirøen 53, cooking over an open fire in the evening (closed Mondays), and the café Wulff & Konstali at no. 37 for breakfast and brunch.

The boats on Havnegade

Just south of the mouth of Nyhavn, boats serving food and beer are moored on Havnegade. Kutteren at no. 52 serves fish on deck, such as fish & chips for 155 DKK and fish cakes on rye bread for 125 DKK. Next door, at no. 50, the beer bar Tipsy Mermaid sits on two old fishing boats; there are only nuts and crisps to go with the beer. Neither states its season, so check their own websites before you go. In Nyhavn itself, two of the restaurants are boats: Oranje on an old ship and Judie on the boat Liva.

The Playhouse at the end of Nyhavn

The large building on the water at the end of Nyhavn is the Royal Danish Playhouse (Skuespilhuset), part of the Royal Danish Theatre. Its restaurant is now called Aamanns Replik and is open to everyone, with or without a theatre ticket, about five minutes' walk from the quay. There is smørrebrød for lunch every day, such as marinated herring for 115 DKK or a menu of three pieces and a flødebolle for 350 DKK, and Nordic dishes in the evening from Tuesday to Saturday.

The Opera House across the harbour

The Opera House stands on Holmen, across the harbour. On foot it is about 1.4 km or 18 minutes over the Inderhavnsbroen bridge and Paper Island, and harbour buses 991 and 992 sail from Nyhavn to the Opera House. The brasserie Amélie in the Opera House, formerly Almanak, is open to everyone, with or without a ticket, and has a 350 DKK business lunch from Thursday to Saturday. Opera Caféen in the foyer serves coffee and cake Tuesday to Sunday 12:00–17:00, but may close for events. On the way is Væksthuset, a glasshouse in the Opera Park with smørrebrød for lunch. More about the area in Things to do near Nyhavn.

Kongens Nytorv

At the other end of Nyhavn is Kongens Nytorv. In the Magasin department store at Kongens Nytorv 13, Hallernes Smørrebrød has a restaurant on the 5th floor and a counter in the Mad & Vin food hall on the lower ground floor; it keeps Magasin's opening hours. On the square itself, the French bistro Ravage at no. 16 serves moules, pariserbøf and smørrebrød at lunch (two courses for 245 DKK) and is open until 02:00 on Friday and Saturday. For a fine meal, Marchal at Hotel d'Angleterre has a Michelin star and a two-course lunch menu for 675 DKK.

Boltens Gård

Boltens Gård lies between Gothersgade and Store Kongensgade, about a four-minute walk from the quay. Many people remember Boltens Food Court, a market of street food stalls that opened here in 2019 and went bankrupt in 2023. Today Mr. Pho sits by the courtyard at Gothersgade 10 with pho for 135 DKK, and inside the courtyard Den Lille Fede serves five courses for 450 DKK, Monday to Saturday evenings. The beer bar Ølhaven has 26 taps of Danish beer, but no food.

The Strandstræde streets

Lille and Store Strandstræde run just north of the quay, a minute or two from the water. Restaurant Anton at Store Strandstræde 3 has smørrebrød for lunch, such as spiced herring for 135 DKK, and Nordic food in the evening every day. Zeleste at no. 6 serves fish and shellfish and has a cobbled courtyard; at lunch, moules frites cost 195 DKK. At Lille Strandstræde 13, Estin makes green salads and hot dishes to take away, on weekdays only, 11:00–15:00.

Sankt Annæ Plads

Sankt Annæ Plads runs from Bredgade down to the Playhouse, a three- to four-minute walk from the quay. Restaurant Sankt Annæ at no. 12 is a classic Danish lunch restaurant with smørrebrød, herring and snaps, such as spiced herring for 130 DKK and egg with hand-peeled shrimp for 165 DKK; it is open for lunch only, Tuesday to Saturday. Damindra at no. 16 is Japanese, with lunch from 298 DKK and dinner from 585 DKK, also Tuesday to Saturday. The Modern at no. 19C is open from morning until late every day, with smørrebrød, burgers and moules frites.

Store Kongensgade and Bredgade

At Store Kongensgade 24, Hanoi Alley sells Vietnamese street food every day 11:30–21:30, such as bánh mì for 75 DKK, about four minutes from the quay. Cabin at no. 32 is a café with coffee and breakfast every day from 08:00, and Restaurant Rebel at no. 52 has a 775 DKK seasonal menu Tuesday to Saturday evenings. At Bredgade 63, Salon serves French food and smørrebrød at lunch (closed Sundays), and at no. 76, about a quarter of an hour's walk from the quay, Café Petersborg serves a classic Danish lunch such as spiced herring for 119 DKK and stjerneskud for 225 DKK. The bakeries on Store Kongensgade are in our guide to kanelsnegl near Nyhavn.

How we chose

We only included places in the streets and squares closest to Nyhavn, and we chose a few in each area that offer something different from the restaurants on the quay: street food, smørrebrød, a quick lunch or a big dinner. We have not ranked them, and no place pays to be listed. Addresses, prices and opening hours come from each place's own website (October 2026), and the walking times are our own route measurements from the nearest point on the quay. If you'd rather sit by the water in Nyhavn itself, you'll find them all in our list of restaurants in Nyhavn.
